Lloyd went away early in the stage along with Bertogliati and together the two established a well-functioning partnership that held well into the final climb of stage. With almost eleven kilometres left to the bicycle lights attacked Matthew Lloyd and drove solo down to the target of Marina di Carrara.

The victory was Matthew Lloyd’s first in one of the three major stage races and he is the new leader in the mountain competition after winning all three mountains during the day.
