Basso Drygade out-Tschopp Won the Last Mountain Stage

Road: Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Doimo) made no mistake on the last line of this year’s Giro d’Italia on Saturday. With the pink Jersey on his shoulders he guarded their lead and now has competition in the bag before the final time trial in Verona. Johann Tschopp from Bbox Bouygues Telecom was the fastest to Suit del Tonale.

Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Doimo) made no mistake on the last line of this year’s Giro d’Italia on Saturday. With the pink Jersey on his shoulders he guarded their lead and now has competition in the bag before the final time trial in Verona. Johann Tschopp from Bbox Bouygues Telecom was the fastest to Suit del Tonale.
It was a tough mountain stage awaiting Girots remaining cyclists on the 20th stage. When it remained five kilometers of the Passo di Gavia, this year’s Cima Coppi (the highest point of this year’s Giro d’Italia), attacked the Swiss Joahnn Tschopp along with Gilberto Simoni (Lampre-Farnese Vini), who concludes his career on Sunday. Johann Tschopp was first over the Cima Coppi and in the subsequent downward slope he placed by Simoni and held solo to the finish.

Cadel Evans (BMC Racing Team) went on the attack from head the field in the final climb but was unable to get any bigger. He was, however, escaped and rolled into the goal as second man on stage, distanced by 16 seconds by Johann Tschopp.

Ivan Basso finished in nine seconds late against the world champion, but at the same time grew the distance down to David Arroyo (Caisse d’Epargne) with 16 seconds so he has continued a steady grip on the final victory. Only remaining obstacle for Ivan Basso is Torricelle-ascent at tomorrow’s time trial measuring 15 kilometers.
